The 1975 book The House of Blue Lights by Kay J. It’s uncertain exactly when the property began to gain notoriety. Most cats and dogs were buried in small caskets and marked by tiny tombstones. Many were strays that found their way to the cat house and were then allowed to stay. Few of the dozens of cats on the property were brought in by Skiles. We are indebted to Suzie and Suzanne for a very special weekend, and look forward to returning soon.Left: Skiles and two of his St. The dinner was fabulous, and it was so special to share a quiet Valentines dinner alone together in our room. Well, that was an absolute highlight for us. Because ours was a last-minute reservation, the restaurant's dinner had no more spaces available, but since it was Valentines day, and all of the local restaurants were full, the innkeepers were kind enough to allow us to order a dinner basket for our room. My sweetie is a history buff, so he loved that Thomas Jefferson had been here (I did too). Our room, the Jefferson, was not what I was looking for in terms of ambience, but it was the only one available. On this visit, my partner and I came for what turned out to be a very lovely and special weekend. I had been here twice before, including bringing my parents and whole family (including siblings and spouses) to celebrate my parents special wedding anniversary a number of years ago. I hate to give a bad review, but I'm just being honest. I'm sure if you have been coming here for years, and are friends with the owners, it is fine, very relaxing and homey. But there are too many great places to go and stay, so we probably won't be coming back here. It is quite a ways in the rain to the car park area. It was pouring down rain when we left on Monday morning and maybe an offer of an umbrella would have been a nice gesture. We have been staying in a lot of places lately that offer some sort of wine reception in the afternoon, or at least a glass of ice tea and maybe a cookie at check-in, or an offer to help with bags, in or out, would also be nice. It is just a bit tired and lacks any sort of freshness or vitality. It is a lovely old property, and I know first hand how much it costs to maintain a property that is over 200 years old. I'm sorry to say I think this place is past it's prime. For the price we paid here we have stayed at some terrific places with incredible breakfasts. It was something that was very simple, could be thrown together in a few minutes, and stuck on a plate in a matter of seconds. I love a wonderful, thoughtful, fresh breakfast when we are staying at an inn or Bed and Breakfast. I got the egg choice (jarred salsa on the bottom two eggs and some grated cheese on top, baked in the ramekin) an ice cream scoop of polenta and two little sausage links. three slices of a loaf of cinammon swirl coffee cake, ten minutes later our sauteed plum was served, (it was delicious) then our breakfast in a ramekin. Breakfast was very simple, everyone sits at 9:00. When you think you are paying $37.50 for pork tenderloin is seems a bit high. Small but tasty salad, (forgot the candied pecans) pork tenderloin and mashed potatoes, steamed green beans, and a yummy chocolate panna cotta, focaccia, and butter. We were there on a Sunday evening and had ordered the dinner basket, it was adequate, but for $75.00 it would have been nice to include maybe a bottle of water or something to drink. It needed a good cleaning, the windows were filthy, there must have been a shelf broken in our bathroom that was still missing, the bathroom amenities looked like they had been sitting on the sink for a couple months. Those were the pros, now the cons of our stay. The bed was comfortable, nice linens, (I took off the old heavy brocade bedspread and re-made the bed with the nice feather duvet at the end of the bed.) I took a peak at the room across the hall and it was more to my taste, better bathroom, more up-dated, also very large. Very large room, nice big sitting room, large bedroom and access to the porch. I told her I wanted a very nice room, let her suggest the one I should book since she knew better than I (having never stayed there before). This was an anniversary trip for my husband and I and I specifically told the inn-keeper that when I booked the room. I was totally surprised when we arrived at the property and took a look at the rooms, and grounds after first checking out the other reviews on-line. As someone who has worked in country inns and travels a lot, this property is in need of a makeover.
